THE WATCHMAN – Part 1
.
Upon the wall a watchman stands beneath the midnight sky,
His eyes are fixed upon the road, his duty is to spy.
He does not wait until the danger reaches where we stand,
He sounds the warning far ahead, before it reaches land.
.
God spoke to His prophet Ezekiel and gave him watchman’s care,
To see the danger approaching and to warn the people there.
The watchman’s task is not to guess what people want to hear,
His task is simply sounding truth when danger draws near.
.
A watchman sees what lies ahead before it comes in sight,
He watches through the darkest hours and guards throughout the night.
He cannot wait until the sword has reached the city gate,
For warnings given after harm has come are warnings given late.
.
And God will ask the watchman not just what he chose to say,
But what he saw approaching and decided not to say.
For silence is a decision when danger can be seen,
And failing to sound the warning is not the same as being clean.
.
So where is today’s watchman standing high upon the wall?
Who sees the changing landscape and will warn before we fall?
Who stands before the congregation and speaks what Scripture says?
Who dares to name the danger while the nation goes its ways?
.
Not asking for a party, nor endorsing candidates,
Not asking for a pulpit to become a political debate.
The church was never called to serve a party, left or right,
But called to shine the truth of God into the darkest night.
.
The question is much simpler than political decree:
What does the Word of God say about the things we see?
What forces work against the things that Scripture calls good?
And are God’s people being warned as faithful watchmen should?
.
If silence fills the sanctuary and no warning can be heard,
Perhaps the problem isn’t wisdom, but fear that has occurred.
The watchman sees the danger ahead but chooses not to speak,
While faithful men and women sit in silence, week by week.
.
And silence spreads like winter frost across the countryside,
While Christians wonder if their eyes and hearts have been denied.
They watch the world around them and begin to wonder why
The people they have trusted now have nothing to testify.
.
They wonder if they’re mistaken for seeing what they see,
They question their convictions and their spiritual clarity.
They wonder if their concerns are foolish, strange, or wrong,
Because the pulpit remains silent when the warning should be strong.
.
But silence does not make the danger disappear from view,
And refusing to name the darkness does not make darkness new.
The watchman cannot hide behind a comfortable disguise,
For God has placed him on the wall to open people’s eyes.
.
Isaiah spoke of leaders who had failed to guard the sheep,
Who could not see the danger because they chose to sleep.
He called them blind and ignorant, unable to proclaim,
Like silent dogs that would not bark when danger finally came.
.
They loved their ease and comfort, their reputation and their gain,
While danger moved toward those they had been called to sustain.
They chose the safer silence rather than the harder truth,
And left the ones they shepherded without a warning’s proof.
.
But pastors are not necessarily wicked when they’re still,
Nor does their silence always mean they lack God’s will.
Perhaps they are simply frightened by the price they may have to pay,
Afraid of losing members or their income day by day.
.
Afraid that angry voices will attack them from outside,
Afraid that social media will accuse them of political pride.
Afraid that donors may depart, afraid the IRS may come,
Afraid that speaking truth will bring a battle they can’t overcome.
