       JUST KIDDING

Me and brother Jim are running those rocky hills in our tough bare feet,

Chasing Frank and Jessy through the thickets and briars and muddy creek.

Jim had his trusty rifle, fashioned from an old dead tree,

And I had my bow and arrow that Geronimo had given me.

Jim drew a bead and shot the iron off Jessy’s hip,

As Frank galloped by, I jumped him from a high rock cliff.

We caught those nasty crooks and returned the money to the town,

All the girls wanted to give us kisses, we didn’t have the heart turn’em down.

‘AND THEN’

Me and big Dan Issel are running the down the court at Memorial Colosseum having fun,

Big Dan got the rebound and made the perfect pass to hit me on the run.

A quick dribble behind the back, a little head fake, I slammed it, ball and rim, what fun,

We sent Alcindor home that night with his head hung low, because Big Blue had won.

Big Dan held me shoulder high as the Kentucky crowd went wild,

And just for a moment I thought I saw old Adolph Rupp smile.

‘AND THEN’

She had long dark hair and big brown eyes, a wonderful smile and olive skin,

The kind of girl that warms a young boy’s heart and causes a red-faced grin.

I suddenly realized I was falling fast for the most beautiful girl in our Sunday school class.

Could a beauty such as she, feel the same about a skinny country boy like me.

Her smile was so inviting, I knew it must be true, appeared she had the same feelings too.

So, with shaky knees and a pounding heart I made my way down her pew.

I introduced myself, and she introduced me to her boy-friend Hugh.

‘AND THEN’

A comet is speeding directly toward the earth and something must be done,

I hate missions like this, but my friend J F K says, to save the earth, I’m the only one.

Well, I’ve done it before I guess I can do it again.

A few boards and nails and some seagrass string, building a rocket shouldn’t be a big thing,

But I’ll need gas, at least a gallon or two. I can get that from dad’s truck with a garden hose,

I’ll drag the rocket behind the barn and get this done before mom and dad knows.

Liftoff was good, I’m speeding through the clouds, on my way to lasso that thing,

With dad’s log chain and a big hook, I’ll grab that comet and give it a sling.

Well, the earth is saved again, and ‘No’ Mr. President I don’t need a medal, but I do need to ask,

Don’t tell my dad that I stole his gas.

‘AND THEN’

Morning comes with a blaring alarm clock sound,

Now my mind all tangled with dreams scattered ’round.

I blink awake, the many dreams in excess,

“No more sassafras tea before bed, I must confess!

For in my dreams, my mind ran loose and wild,

Reliving my life as a Kentucky bluegrass child.”
